Imagine someone getting inspired by World War Z and decides to make a zombie movie and has no idea on what to shoot other than showing the hero shooting the zombies. Directed by Shakti Sounder Rajan, Miruthan is full of mediocre imagination which somewhat test the patience of everyone. It is a silly zombie theme stuffed with the typical Tamil flavors like family sentiments, instantaneous eternal love and over the top heroism.
Karthik is an SI in the traffic department. He has a small sister. That’s just the backdrop of the hero. The movie is ultimately about the after effects of a virus which got spread in Ootty. The hero, his friend and a set of doctors including the hero’s love interest are on a mission to get out of Ootty, so that they can work on the cure for this issue. The killing spree of the zombie turned citizens and how they finally reach that point of finding the cure is what Miruthan narrating.
The movie is way too swift and can’t place its characters properly. The bride hunt, romance part etc. before the zombie killing extravaganza looks too clichéd. Honestly speaking, all those zombie attack sequences look terribly compromised in terms of technical aspects like art, makeup, stunts etc. There is zero bit of novel imagination in the content and you just get bored seeing the killing spree where the ammo never really goes out of stock. The only slight relief is the discrete humor points involving Kaali Venkat.
Jayam Ravi was okay in portraying the role of the hero. Lakshmi Menon was also fine. In fact everyone in the cast looks okay for their role as the movie isn’t that much of a performance driven one.
As there is this announcement of part 2 by the end of this part, I really hope Shakti Soundar Rajan works on having a proper story with elements that can actually scare the people watching this film (in the right way). May be because of the lack of budget they chose to shoot this part in Ootty. But with the story moving to Chennai, please hire a better producer who is willing to spend money to give the movie a visual quality. As I said, the script here is a mixture of adapted zombie theme and typical Tamil heroism. Hero single handedly rescuing the leading lady in a slow motion fight against hundreds of zombies in the backdrop of a song was something ridiculous. And at the peak of an alarming situation you have this cheesy romance and tacky jokes coming at you. Looking at the placing of songs, it will be very difficult for you to enjoy them. Cinematography is just average.
On the whole Miruthan looks lame and too juvenile on screen. The lack of budget and fresh thinking was clearly visible throughout the film. I couldn’t enjoy this film for its sheer mediocrity. Watch Miruthan if you are a complete alien to the zombie genre.
