32aam Adhyayam 23aam Vaakyam

Watching 32aam Adhyayam 23aam Vaakyam is almost like watching some of the group dance performances in college arts festival. They will download a very successful dance video. Will use the exact same music track and then will reduce the complexity of tough dance moves to simpler ones. The Number 23 is a 2007 Hollywood flick starring Jim Carrey, and the new movie starring Govind Padmasurya is an extremely tacky take on that disappointing thriller.

The story revolves around this couple who are married for more than a year. Freddie the husband has come back to homeland from the US to celebrate the wedding anniversary with wife Ann. A book written by an unknown writer named Noah captures the attention of Freddie as its events sounded very familiar. How this influences his life and what all realities he had to face because of this book and its content is what this movie talking about.

Well they have openly admitted in the beginning that no channel has bought the satellite rights of the movie and in my opinion it would be very difficult to get one. Malayalam cinema has seen movies that were kind of rip offs of many Hollywood flicks including movies like Big B, Cocktail, Anwer etc. But they all had this beauty in being creative by building surroundings and fresh scenarios to narrate a story that is basically a copy of the original. But here the new writer director duo, Arjun Prabhakaran and Gokul Ramakrishnan has just copied the entire movie directed by Joel Schumacher. The Number 23 was a disappointing dark thriller, but I must say that through this Malayalam adaptation named 32aam Adhyayam 23aam Vaakyam, they have succeeded in making The Number 23 look like a quality film. Presenting all the twists and turns in the original movie in a very amateur way with the help of mediocre actors, this movie will torture you if you have seen its original.

On screen Govind Padmasurya was terrible. His dialogue delivery as the intense John Ryan will definitely make you laugh as it wasn’t at all intense. The acting was also over dramatic. The pretty looking Miya gets a dull and dump character. Lal was just about okay. The rest of the cast mainly comprising of unfamiliar faces were also finding it difficult give life to the poorly written dialogues.

As someone who has seen the movie which “inspired” the makers to create something like this, I would never say that the making was good. It looked very bizarre at many places with no depth given to the content. The character played by Jim Carrey was already in that dark zone, which kind of made sense for his spooky interests. But here the movie has Freddy in a very normal zone and his interest to go after the events in the book sounded crazy. The only thing the makers have contributed creatively is to add a twisted climax which turned the original tragedy into a comedy. That too had elements of clichés. The frames are mostly fixed and the lack of agile visuals surely makes the movie least intriguing. Edits weren’t sharp and the BGM was annoying. Only positive is Bijibal’s music, which sadly had no significance in this movie. Dialogues are hilarious in my opinion as a good number of the audience was giggling after hearing most of them.

On the whole it would have been a great experiment for makers who know the business with a bunch of actors who knows to act. The rating for the movie 32aam Adhyayam 23aam Vaakyam is 1/5. If you think the movie deserves better marks, my suggestion is to watch The Number 23.
