You kind of know the basic ingredients of a Sathyan Anthikkad movie as his films are known for projecting family values and other social elements repeatedly. Jomonte Suvisheshangal scripted by Iqbal Kuttippuram and directed by Sathyan Anthikkadu is also another version of it. Because of the repetitiveness in the preaching format of the film, there is no real attraction for the narrative and because of the advising sentiments in the script the content is not so irrelevant.
Jomon is the third son of Vincent. Vincent has many business endeavors including transport buses, textile shops and real estate business. All his other children are well established and the aimless Jomon is yet to get in to that category. The movie Jomonte Suvisheshangal actually deals with a phase in this family’s life where they face a huge set back and tries to tackle all those issues. What are all those issues and how it moulds Jomon to be a better human being is what this film telling us.
Smelling any similarity with Sathyan Anthikkad’s own Vinodayathra? Well I wont blame you for that. It is actually an amalgamation of a few films if you observe. Let me put it this way: It is almost like Vinodayathra + Rasathanthram + Jacobnte Swargarajyam. The script feels like an assembled version of all these stories. As all the three films falls into the “good” category, you cant really say that the story is poor. But unfortunately it is unexciting and predictable. And you get to see certain compromises from a director like Sathyan Anthikkad to fulfill the requirements of fan boys of the hero (bike and the elements around the first love story). Dramatic nature is there in the making but the quality of actors somewhat covers up that glitch.
The director has said that he forgot to say cut seeing the performance of Dulquer Salmaan; No offence to the actor but I never saw one such scene in the film. Dulquer Salmaan delivers a performance which we expected from him and there wasn’t anything that marvelous about the acting. Mukesh as Vincent had the grace and simplicity to be that humble business man. Aishwarya Rajesh has a lengthy role as Vydehi and compared to her other works this one has no huge challenge. Anupama Parameshwaran was fine, but the necessity of her very small character in the movie is questionable. Manobala, Innocent, Vinu Mohan, Muthumani , Jacob Gregory, Shivaji Guruvayoor, Irshad and many more are there in small roles.
The film gets the typical Sathyan Anthikkadu treatment from top to bottom. Because of that the average plot sort of remains average as nothing becomes unpredictable. The script occasionally becomes way too commercial to incorporate the stardom of the lead actor. The intro, Nokki Nokki song and a few more elements doesn’t really match up with the relatable feel we are looking for. The main drawback of the movie is the plot that has less novel elements to its credit. You don’t really have to sit and analyze the film to find the similarities with three movies I mentioned. The main characters are people from Thrissur and interestingly none of them have the signature slang. S Kumar’s visuals were pretty good, especially in song sequences. Among the songs, Nokki Nokki was catchy and the rest wasn’t that interesting.
Jomonte Suvisheshangal is a movie that can’t excite you with its content. I know a lot of family audiences who like this yearly dosage of preach from the veteran director. Jomonte Suvisheshangal would be fine for that category, but I prefer to call it an average cinema.
Rating: 2.5/5
