Friday

Friday directed by new comer Lijin Jose and scripted by Najeem is an attempt that failed to complete its task. Made on the new generation trend of parallel narration of multiple stories, Friday fails to link the stories strongly. The expected bonding between all the stories didn’t work out as it was supposed to be.

If you ask me what the story is, it will be difficult to answer it briefly. It is not actually a story with starting and ending. It’s just a walk through the lives of many people of different shades with some interesting interconnections. An auto driver Balu, an old man who comes to town for shopping regarding his granddaughter, two lovers, Family of a new born baby, a beggar, a couple who arrived at Alappuzha to adopt a girl are the main parts of the stories. How these people are connected is supposed to be the interesting part of the movie.

The main flaw of the movie is the script that fails to bring charm to the content. There were many elements in the movie that were not used with proper intensity. Many stories felt irrelevant at the end. The owl seller, The beggar etc were not used properly.  If the movie was able to contain all the sub stories in the right feel it would have been a much better movie.

Performance wise, Fahad shows us that he can also do characters without Apple products and Luxury cars. Manu delivers a neat performance as the lover boy. Ann was satisfying in her role. Nedumudi Venu has delivered a powerful on screen performance. Asha Sharath has been given a character similar to her mini screen image and she has done it neatly. Vijayaraghavan, Tini Tom, Prakasj Bare and many others has delivered a neat performance.

Lijin’s direction is impressive. He hasn’t gone for any cliché way of making movies. Has tried his level best to keep it realistic. With a better script he will surely impress the audience. Najeem’s dialogs are cool. But when it comes to character background, people can’t feel the emotion of each person. Cinematography was impressive. Rex Vijayan’s BGM was good, but the placing was a little awkward. Visual effects were cool.

Overall, Friday is a movie that fails to reach its goal. Acknowledging a promising director and some solid performances, I am giving 2.5/5 for Friday. It’s just not that movie we expected.
