May not be in the way he expected, but still director Balaji Mohan has succeeded in making the audience understand the value of their voice. Samsaaram Aaroghyathinu Haanikaram was a really risky idea and sadly the execution couldn’t reach that level of perfection.
The story revolves around the weird events happening in Thenmala village in Idukki. A peculiar epidemic causes a particular scenario where some sort of virus takes away people’s ability to speak. Our male protagonist is a vivacious young salesman who aspires to become an RJ. The female protagonist is an introvert junior doctor. Their accidental love story and how the muting fever causes issues in it is what the movie discussing.
The bilingual nature of the movie in a way will make you feel that it should have been a Tamil film. The kind of exaggerations we are used to adjust in a Tamil romantic comedy is definitely there in the first half of the movie. Balaji Mohan takes a crazy turn in the midway. What happened after that was something totally out of control. Enjoying an act of mime for a small time is tolerable, but almost an hour of Chaplinistic cinema with brittle sentiments is something difficult to accommodate. With all those unwanted fan fights happening in between a baseless romance, SAH is too much to tolerate.
Two among the three positives I found in the movie was in the acting department and it was the performances of Dulquer Salmaan and Nazriya. Dulquer’s performance might well make the film makers in the Malayalam industry to give him more expressive and energetic characters. Nazriya on the other side looked so much in control of the introvert character. Madhoo (aint she getting old?) wasn’t given a chance to express her acting talent. Rest of the cast doesn’t really create an impression on you with their performance, in fact some of them were actually unimpressive.
Balaji Mohan’s making style seems to be slightly amateurish. The second half mime was never in control and his writing didn’t showed any freshness. Cheesy feel was there in the screenplay. Some hilarious comments from the audience will certainly entertain you. Third positive of the movie in my opinion was their decision to make Bipin Chandran the dialogue writer. The dialogues have helped the movie in lessening the possible drama and exaggeration. Cinematography and edits are fine. The music wasn’t that appealing.
In short Samsaaram Aarogyathinu Haanikaram tests your sense. My rating is 1.5/5 for this Balaji Mohan product. I enjoyed the audience comments during that second half mute phase rather than the movie.
