The only moment in the new Fantastic Four movie where I found a little bit of entertainment was in that post climax scene where Ben looks at the general when he asks “what if we say no?”. That too just a smirk. Except for that, it’s just a flawed script which looks too dull.
Reed and Ben are childhood friends and the later has always supported Reed to achieve the things he wanted to. Professor Franklin Storm was impressed by Reed’s work on this tele porter thing and offers him scholarship and a chance to work with him on the same subject with all the facilities. Reed goes to Baxter foundation and the movie deals with the experiments he conducts there along with the team given to him and how the success of it adversely affects the proceedings. The consequences and the conclusion of this act is what Fantastic Four narrating.
Reinterpreting things was something that Marvel used to do smartly in the recent past. But here the script and the treatment are quite formulaic. The sort of innovative stuff they have done doesn’t create any sort of curiosity in the minds of the audience. Who will die, who will hide, who will change etc. were quite easy to predict and the climax looked too silly. After making Doom the ultimate killer, they just killed him like a mosquito.
These are actors who have recognition for their talents. But none of them are tested here as the characters they portray don’t have any sort of layers and complications. Miles Teller as the nerdy Reed, Michael Jordan as The human torch and Kate Mara as Susan are just okay. With CGI taking over their characters, there is nothing much to do for Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell.
Making lacks the quintessential excitement. The movie looks too serious about an idea and mission that is too peripheral. The screenplay completely follows the clichés and the characters aren’t given a solid backdrop. The fun factor was literally zero. The other technical aspects like edits, cinematography and CGI were fine. There was no impact of background score.
On the whole Fantastic Four is a gigantic bore. Even the least of expectations won’t help you here. The rating is 1.5/5. Lets hope something good will happen in the sequel.
