Well the only actor in the movie Hero who might have felt that I have made a mark for myself in the film would be Vivan Bhatena who portrayed the role of the negative guy with a good on screen charm. The Jackie Shroff version of Hero is one movie you will feel like a spoof if you watch it now and Nikhil Adwani and his co writer Umesh Bist has tried to tweak it to give a modern makeover. But with melodrama spilling out and the hero failing miserably to emote, Hero becomes a disappointment.
Nothing much has changed from the original. A political criminal under remand asks his henchman Sooraj to kidnap the daughter of the police officer who is in charge of the case. The kidnapping ends up in a romantic relationship between the two and the movie basically deals with their struggle to be together as their families are in a way fighting against each other.
Well its starts off in the usual masala style of having a fight and then a song. And from those two opening acts itself we will get a clear picture that Sooraj Pancholi has limited varieties of expression. Then the movie adapts its original story. Adwani and Bist gives a new look to every event that happened in the original. The colorful villain played by Amreesh Puri is replaced by a political criminal played by Aditya Pancholi and unlike the original, this character is somewhat given a sentimental positive shade. Shakti Kapoor’s role in the original is played by Vivan Bhatena and thankfully there isn’t any motorbike race here. Even after taking away certain possible lengthy events, Hero looks too lengthy and extremely melodramatic.
On screen Sooraj Pancholi fails to create an impression. The guy has a nice smile which might work for posters. Anger, romance, sentiments, attitude and many other delicate phases are there for the character and sadly Junior Pancholi sticks to two expressions (smile and no expression). Athiya Shetty seems to be promising as she could at least provide what we expected from a melodramatic script. Tigmanshu Dulia and Aditya Pancholi were okay in their characters and as I said I liked the performance of Vivan as Ranvijay.
I was expecting a total makeover for the melodramatic Subhash Ghai film from Nikhil Adwani. But Hero in Nikhil’s vision just ended up like a remake of any Telugu film. The lover talks, philosophies and many other areas looks too old fashioned and silly. The script has chopped a lot from the original (which is a good thing), but I wasn’t that pleased with the reinterpretation of the character played by Aditya Pancholi. Dialogues are similar to the 80’s ones. Music was good. Sooraj Pancholi wasn’t that comfortable in doing action sequences with grace.
Hero produced by Salman Khan is an underwhelming experience which has nothing much to surprise the audience. The rating is 2/5 for this Nikhil Adwani Venture. What the movie lacks severely is there in its title.
