Avengers: Infinity War is in a tricky space in my opinion when you look at the franchise as an entertainment entity. I am saying this because I was able to see people trying to convince other people whom they brought to watch Infinity War to wait for the sequel. Avengers Infinity War isn’t the run-of-the-mill superhero film where a huge group of superheroes gather and demolish a gigantic villain. It is trying to achieve something beyond that and in that attempt the typical feel has got reduced. This film is comparatively heavy on emotions and ultimately sets up premise for a more intriguing sequel which will come out next year same time.
Thanos has demanded silence but he doesn’t know that reviewers need to say something about the plot before judging him. So, here goes the spoiler free harmless summary of Infinity War. Thanos already has the Power stone and he is in search for the other stones. Like we all know from almost all the MCU films, Space stone is there inside the Tesseract. Time stone is with doctor strange and the mind stone is there on the head of vision. Collector has the reality stone and the soul stone is something nobody knows the location. Well if Thanos gets all these stones, his idea of wiping half of humanity would happen with the snap of a finger. Avengers are trying to stop him and what happens in this battle is what Infinity War talking about.
“Which superhero will die at the end of Civil War?” was one question that was there in almost every avengers related article or video in the recent past. The plus side of the movie Avengers: Infinity War is actually the fact that it sort of makes these kinds of questions that made a lot of sound almost feel like irrelevant. Construction of an antagonist have always been one area where Marvel had an edge over their rivals and here also we get to see that process succeeding and that too in a way making us look at the whole film in a different way. The hunt for the stone is almost a way to explore Thanos who is like a least exposed character for a person like me who has very little comic book knowledge. But much like other villains we have seen in the MCU (barring Ultron), Thanos also has an emotional side and ideologies that can create a debate. What one can say as a negative to the film is the running time and also the fact that not every character gets enough space. Well with this much of superheroes in the character map, I would say whatever little they got is legitimate.
When you look at it, the performances are on the more intense side. Even the chilled out Guardians are also in a mood to take revenge. It is a really tough task to accommodate everyone in the MCU into the picture with equal relevance and in my opinion Robert Downy Junior, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana and Josh Brolin who plays the role of Thanos were the ones who got most of the lime light. And Thanos was pretty impressive considering the kind of depth the character gradually gets in the story. I am hoping the sequel will have more space for the characters that got less emphasis in this one.
The Russo brothers and the writers deserve to be appreciated for taking the risk of making it an emotionally hefty movie rather than a popcorn entertainer. It has everything a popcorn entertainer needs except for a conclusion that sort of makes you indulge as a viewer on how and what they exactly are planning to do (unless you are a comic book pundit and has done all these calculations 10 years back). A canvas like this is a really tough one to contain as it has numerous characters and comparatively lesser time for everything. Technically, the special effects and stunts are as always awesome. The cinematography of the movie also captures the intensity through darkish close frames. The typical humour we see in these films is still there.
At the end of it, Avengers Infinity War had whistle worthy moments and Grand set pieces alongside a climax that doesn’t go along with one everyone would expect. I wasn’t disappointed. The feeling is to kind of backtrack the movie or the franchise and to expect for something more interesting in the coming sequel. Just don’t try to watch it with the wiki summary knowledge about all the other MCU movies.
