Kavi Uddheshichathu has some unnecessary writing in its first half. In an attempt to build the atmosphere required for the story to move on, this Thomas Liju Thomas movie goes through an aimless phase somewhat compromising to the formulas of a commercial cinema. But that glitch somewhere gets a cover up in the second half as the movie progresses towards a clear plot and crisis. With humor sufficiently allocated in dialogues and situations, Kavi Uddheshichathu is a passable okay film with nothing much to cheer about.
Jimmy is this jobless young man (how many times!) who is a volleyball player. He wanted to be a police officer, but he couldn’t get that job because of his short tempered nature. A lottery agent plants the thought of marrying a rich girl and securing life in Jimmy’s head and his attempts for that ultimately ended up in a betting scenario where he would get the girl if he can win a volleyball championship. The film is ultimately is focusing on Jimmy’s efforts to accomplish that.
The formulas get used in the first half of Kavi Uddeshichathu. The instant blooming shallow romance, wafer thin revenge reasons and pointless comedy tracks and a tribute to the short film Ramaniyechiyude Naamathil gets featured in the first half with the usual dramatics. Only towards the end of the first half Kavi Uddheshichathu manages to enter the main plot. After having that clarity, the film moves with an aim. The humor in those portions have a blend with the way story moves forward. Even though things are predictable, the jokes that come out through dialogues and ironical situations keep the movie in that entertaining zone.
It is directed by the duo Thomas and Liju Thomas who made that impressive short film Ramaniyechiyude Naamathil. That film and the latest one they released a few days back had the craft of summarizing certain thoughts effectively. But in the case of their feature film, there is no such directorial signature stuff to create an impression. The writing is sluggish in the first half and engaging in the second half. The humor works effectively (even the whatsapp forward joke looked neat on screen). The song from Vinu Thomas sounded really good. The rest of the tracks couldn’t create any vibe and the background score also wasn’t that catchy.
Asif Ali has done the role of Jimmy with the required attitude. He is gradually becoming that behaving actor through each film. Narain has some hiccups in being comical. Biju Menon who appears only in the second half gets a role that utilizes his typical style. Anju Kurian was just okay (Her dubsmash videos are still better). The friend circle portrayed by Sudhy Koppa, Balu, Ganapathi and Abhishek Raveendran (this guy has got the timing for comedy) was quite good. The elaborate cast has faces like Lena, Sasi Kalinga, Saiju Kuruppu, Sunil Sughada, Bindhu Panicker, Dinesh Prabhakar and a few more and they were all okay in their respective roles.
To sum it up, I would say Kavi Uddheshichathu is an average entertainer which could have been much better if they had focused more on the story they wanted to tell rather than wandering around the premise for the sake of comedy.
