Pierre Coffin is back with the Despicable Me franchise and the third outing is also a fun watch. The fun we got to see in the previous parts of the film was definitely there, but somewhere the story this time was not narrated in a way that could make us laugh out loud frequently the way the other two films did.
Gru who is now a part of the Anti Villain League along with his partner Lucy gets thrown away from the organization as he wasn’t able to capture a former TV star and now real life super villain Balthazar Bratt. During that bad phase Gru gets to know about his twin brother Dru and decides to visit him. The character of his brother and the changes that happen in Gru after Dru’s entry and how things eventually help Gru in his fight against Bratt is what Despicable Me 3 all about.
Gru and the sweet kids may be the engine of the whole franchise. But our dear minions are the wheels that make this franchise a roller coaster kind of experience. The main complaint I have regarding Despicable Me 3 is that there isn’t much of Minions here. The story sort of detaches the Minions from the main characters in the beginning section and they are only coming to action in the very last stage. I am saying this because whenever they came on screen in large numbers the fun quotient was definitely high. The talent show spoof and the jail break sequence in Despicable Me 3 are the most fun scenes and both featured only Minions.
Pierre Coffin along with his Minions directorial partner Kyle Balda has created Despicable Me 3. The minute quirks in the animation and the scene choreography make sure that the film will have the fun feel which we all would like to see. The story this time is a bit less absorbing. Subplots are there trying to emphasize on the relationship between the kids and Lucy, but they sound a bit preachy. And the twin brother part also looks fine in the humor aspect, but not quite there when you analyze the story.
Steve Carell once again handles the diction perfectly to make Gru the lovable villain. Trey Parker adds life to the “Musical” villain Bratt. The others also were fine. Elsie Fisher is not the one who has dubbed for Agnes in this part and I must say that the new voice isn’t as sweet as Elsie’s. (That voice used to remind me of Po from Teletubbies)
I enjoyed watching Despicable Me 3 for sure. But I won’t say it’s the best in the franchise. It’s a really good choice for a weekend fun watch with your kids. BTW I loved the way they incorporated the Trump element (I love Gru Cap).
