The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring with its scary enough premise and impressive direction managed to be a very successful horror film. And with The Conjuring 2 as well, director James Wan sort of achieves the same level of perfection. Both the movies were based on recorded events and so we cant really argue on the fact that the content is illogical or something. Being predictable is a problem every horror movie faces, but James Wan still manages to keep us guessing.

After the events we see in the first movie Ed and Lorraine are sort of going through a phase were they decided not to attend any cases for a while after Lorraine saw certain projections which were a bit too scary. But a house in UK, reports certain paranormal activity and the church requests the service of the couple to understand whether it’s a hoax or anything is actually there. How the investigation goes and how they found a solution to the problem is what The Conjuring 2 all about.

Well we all know how will be the theatrical experience would be. We will all be mumbling “here it comes, here it comes…”, some will try to avoid eye contact, people like me would very smartly clean the spectacles and some might even call friends. Yes! The Conjuring 2 has everything to make people do all these stuff by testing their ability to face horror. James Wan knows exactly when we will stop expecting the horror moment and that is pretty much what most of the audience looking for. Try and surprise us! On a different note, I don’t really understand the “bravery” of going to the really spooky underground section of a haunted house to fix a plumping issue.

James Wan, who has been doing this Horror stuff for a while has done a good job in the visual presentation of the movie. It looks real and the mixing of visuals with all those yester years video tape technology and a few more other things really gave more authenticity to the content.  I liked that shot in the opening sequence where you get to know what Lorraine is trying to do when we see her mirror reflection. Cinematography was really impressive with some really amusing single shot sequences. Editor also did a fine job in keeping the audience guessing by maintaining the intrigue. All the horror tricks were executed nicely using both practical efforts and visual effects. Special appreciation to the production design unit for recreating the old UK.

Among performers Vera Farmiga was good as the always intense Lorraine Warren. Patrick Wilson adds a bit of wit to the portrayal of the religious Ed Warren. It has an elaborate cast comprising of the actors who play the family members of the haunted house and among them I liked the performance Madison Wolfe who played the role of Janet.

The Conjuring 2 is good. I am not a big fan of the genre and there aren’t many movies that completely blew me away in this genre. So I would say it has almost the same impact that The Conjuring created. Now you decide!
