Oronnonnara Pranayakadha

SPOILER ALERT: Without revealing the major plot twist, this review will be incomplete. So if you are someone who really wants to watch Oronnonnara Pranayakadha, don’t read this review.
Imagine a situation where you are watching a really dull movie. And the second half of the movie has horrendous developments making you do facepalm repeatedly. And the reviewer in me was seriously angry thinking how anyone with the right frame of my mind can do a movie like this. And just when I was fed up of the outdated melodrama that was happening, the director surprised me with the most bizarre climax one can imagine; the one-hour long pile of mediocrity I saw till that point was the hero’s daydream.

Ramanan and Amina are our central protagonists. Amina has always had a competitive approach towards Ramanan ever since he won the Mappilappattu competition during the second standard. Well, we know the drill. The hero and heroine fall in love and because of the communal issues they had to leave the place and go to Chennai. What happens in Chennai and how the love life moves ahead is what Oronnonnara Pranayakadha depicting.

Heroine challenges the hero to sing on a higher pitch, he goes to the nearby pond to practice and he gets hospitalized as he didn’t know how to swim. Heroine challenges the hero to ride a bike, he tries to learn driving and as you just predicted, the hero gets injured in an accident and gets hospitalized again. And lastly the heroine proposes to the hero and he goes unconscious and again goes to the hospital. The first half of Oronnonnara Pranayakadha is a mix of random comedy and getting admitted in the hospital. When Shibu Balan got bored of it, he decided to include a communal violence track and just shifted the story to Chennai. And suddenly this Raghuvinte Swantham Rasiya becomes a Vadakkunokkiyanthram and what happens in that story is so stupid that only a dream should be a valid reason to justify all that bizarreness.

Director Shibu Balan has previously made the Sreenivasan starrer Nagravaridhi Naduvil Njan. But this time he took up the responsibility of scripting the movie and that really made a mess of this film. The movie is so banal that I really wonder whether there was a proper script. The secularism we get to see in both halves of the movie is so unreal that even the most optimistic person in Kerala may say that they have pushed it far too much. And writing a pathetic second half and finally making all of it a dream is pretty much equal to snatching money directly from the pockets of the viewer. The songs in this movie were pretty good, but sadly the visualization was crass.

Shebin Benson has no real charm to be Ramanan. His portrayal or the director’s vision of Ramanan is far too naïve. And in the second half emotional sequences, the expression on his face and the gravity of the situation had no connection. Irupathiyonnam Noottandu fame Zaya David looked energetic in this movie and the actress should retain the same dubbing artist for her future films. Indian Pallassery is the comic relief and in this deserted script, he was indeed a mirage. Vinay Forrt, Alencier, Sudheer Karamana, Irshad, Binoy, Vinod Kovoor and many more are there in the film and none of them has anything memorable to do. The “ette” from Surabhi Lakshmi can give you a serious headache.

Oronnonnara Pranayakadha is a dishonest movie. There are many movies where you will feel like walking out of the theater in the midway. But Oronnonnara Pranayakadha is one movie where you should leave the theater in midway to reduce the psychological damage it can create.
