Love Action Drama

Love Action Drama is an ultimate Nivin Pauly show. But the problem is that it is only a Nivin Pauly show. I am someone who has enjoyed watching movies like Thattathin Marayathu, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, etc. Those films may not be monumental cinematic achievements, but they were thoroughly engaging and all of them had a very structured story that we can tell someone. When it comes to Love Action Drama it feels like they are stretching a thin idea to an unacceptable extent.

Dinesh, a jobless young man from a wealthy family is our hero. He was in love with his cousin, but she never wanted a relationship. So our man child hero is mad at her. But on her wedding day, he happens to meet another girl named Shobha. The growth of the friendship between these two and what all happens in that journey is what the movie Love Action Drama showing us.

It’s a bit of an irony that in a movie titled Love Action Drama, none of those emotions were happening organically or smoothly. Shobha is actually the carrier of Love, and she frequently roots for Dinesh in front of everyone. In the entire movie, I couldn’t find one sensible scene that would explain why an independent young girl would love such a lazy guy. In one scene after getting a slap from Shobha, Dineshan goes to a self-exploration mode that lasts for 5 minutes. A love story with zero-depth showing such drama over a slap is really difficult to understand. And action is there just for the sake of it. If you ask me have I laughed during the film? Yes, I have laughed out loud at multiple occasions watching this film. But those moments are so isolated and those are bits that don’t really contribute to the evolution of the story.

On the acting side, it is Nivin Pauly’s safe zone and he has unleashed himself in the best way possible. If you have enjoyed his style of comedy in Thattathin Marayathu and Oru Vadakkan Selfie, you will really enjoy some of the humor bits in this movie. Nayanthara feels like an addition mostly for the publicity. The character of Shobha is definitely underwritten. There isn’t enough emphasis on what’s Shobha’s job in the movie. Shobha’s response to Dineshan’s attitude is like Unnikrishnan’s response to Gadha in Vandanam – Bu Still I Love You! Aju Varghese, the quintessential sidekick of the movie scores occasionally and there are some areas where his mumbling style comedy is a bit of an annoyance. Dhanya Balakrishna as the heroine’s friend was impressive. The cast of the movie has numerous names with very less screen time including Mallika Sukumaran, Renji Panicker, Sreenivasan, Durga Krishna, Jude Anthony Joseph, Motta Rajendran, Sunder Ramu, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Basil Joseph, etc.

In his first directorial, Dhyan Sreenivasan is trying to explore a zone his brother has managed to crack previously. But what he failed to adapt from Vineeth’s movies is that the story part should be more appealing. If you try to tell the story of Love Action Drama to someone, it will be like Dineshan screws it up and Shobha forgives him repeated 10 times. The dialogue humor that is largely improvised is the saving grace of this film. The first half of the movie is fairly engaging as it largely dealt with humor. But the second half of the movie is struggling extremely to make things look engaging.  And you can pretty much sense where the movie is going. They are hiding the shallow content with temporary jokes. The cinematography by Jomon T John and Roby Varghese Raj suits the style of visual quality this movie demands. Shaan Rahman’s music has some unique tracks and some of his usual numbers. The background score of the movie is basically different variations of the Kudukk Pottiya Kuppayam song.

The dialogue humor kind of saves Love Action Drama from being a boring experience. Love Action Drama is that kind of movie where you are neither bored nor entertained the way you expected. The Nivin Pauly of Love Action Drama is highly likable, everything else is easily forgettable.
