Saw acclaimed serial director KK Rajeev’s first film venture “Njanum Ente Familyum” starring Jayaram, Mamtha, Mythili, Manoj K Jayan Nedumudi Venu and Jagathy Sreekumar. Well its a typical malayalam family dram. Subject is not something that is new. But the subject has a point in modern day situations. Its completely a family orientated movie. The problems a man had to face due to his extra marital affair.
The story is about Dr. Dhinanadhan a highly qualified Cardiologist, played by Jayaram and his family. How his life changes after the entry of a patient John Paily, played by Manoj K Jayan. As I said earlier the story has importance in the present scenario, but in the sense of a movie making Njanum Ente Familyum goes behind the same old melodramatic formula.
In the performance side, Jayaram is apt for the character. I dont know why all film makers are trying to give him a psycho like feel towards the climax (it happened in Veruthe Oru Bharya and Swapna Sanchari). Mamtha did her part neatly. The small girl who played Dhinanathan’s daughters role was also really good. Manoj K Jayan did the role of John Paily without any flow. I think the biggest miscast was Mythily. Neither her physique nor her acting couldnt justify that character. Someone like Meera Jasmine was apt for that role in my view. Jagathy gave the audience some real good moments to laugh. Nedumudi Venu, Mallika sukumaran and the rest of the cast was also impressive.
In the technical side, direction is not that bad, but still the effect of serials is there on Mr KK Rajeev. Too many insidents were shown to visualize the characters agony, their bonding etc. Conveying them through minimal usage of scenes would have made it better. I liked the way he handled the scene which is supposed to be intense. Screenplay of Cheriyan Kalpakavaadi is good. Not that much dragging. But as I said, I felt the no. of scenes was a little too much. Dialogs were also somewhat fine. The dialog Mythili says when Jayaram comes to see her Baby was too much dramatic. Jagathy’s dialog “Bulb fuse aayathinu Edisonte thanthakku vilichittu karyamundo??” made the audience laugh. The scene where Mallika sends the servant along with Jayaram was a big bore, and the audience howled at it. Climax was an expected one, as the character played by Mamtha is a doctor. All the other technical backup were fine. That hospital accident was handled neatly by the camera man and the VFX team.
All in all “Njanum Ente Familiyum” is an average film discussing a relevant topic. KK Rajeev is much better than Saji Surendran and Radhakrishnan Mangalath (directors came from tv serial field). Families wont mind giving this film a 3/5 rating.
But for me its a typical average malayalam movie.
I am giving 2.5/5 and a thumbs up for director KK Rajeev’s “Njanum Ente Familyum”.
